Structuring Your Content with Categories and Tags in 5 Steps

Step 1: Understand Categories and Tags

  • Categories: Used to group your posts under broad topics. They are hierarchical, allowing subcategories for more detailed organization.
  • Tags: More specific than categories, tags describe the details of your posts. They are not hierarchical and can be used to indicate the subjects of a post.

Step 2: Plan Your Categories

Start with a small set of general categories that represent the main themes of your site. Think about your content strategy and how your audience might search for information on your site. Categories should be broad enough to cover multiple posts but specific enough to provide a clear indication of the content type.

Step 3: Use Tags for Specific Details

While categories classify the broad topics of your posts, tags should be used to describe the specific details of your content. Tags help users find content on more niche topics and can improve the discoverability of your posts through search engines.

Step 4: Implement Categories and Tags

When creating or editing a post in WordPress:

  • Add Categories: In the Document settings on the right-hand side, you’ll find the Categories section. Here, you can add new categories or assign existing ones.
  • Add Tags: Below the Categories section, there’s a Tags field where you can type in your tags. Separate tags with commas.

Step 5: Review and Adjust Regularly

As your site grows, review your categories and tags periodically to ensure they still align with your content strategy. Consolidate similar tags or categories if necessary to avoid confusion and maintain a clean structure.

  1. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.
I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is wonderful
